“Miss Lemon” amaryllis (more commonly known by its commercial name ‘Lemon Star’) is a graceful hybrid variety celebrated for its large, luminescent blooms and fresh, spring-like colour palette.
Appearance & Characteristics
- Flowers: Large, trumpet-shaped blooms that typically measure 18–22 cm in diameter.
- Colour: The petals are a creamy, pale yellow that lightens to a soft white as they age. The centre (throat) features a distinctive rich lime-green hue that gradually fades to a yellowish-cream.
- Growth: Each bulb typically produces one to three sturdy stems (scapes) reaching heights of 45–60 cm, with each stem bearing 4 to 6 flowers.
- Bloom Time: Typically flowers in winter or early spring (roughly 8–12 weeks after planting), making it a popular choice for indoor winter decoration.
Care & Cultivation
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light. Avoid direct, scorching afternoon sun, which can damage the delicate petals.
- Watering: Water sparingly upon planting. Once the green sprout appears, increase watering to keep the soil barely moist—never soggy, as the bulbs are prone to rot.
- Planting: Use a well-draining potting mix. Plant the bulb so the shoulders (top 1/3) are exposed above the soil line.
- Post-Bloom: To encourage reblooming, cut the faded flower stalks but leave the foliage intact to store energy. Move the bulb to a cool, dark place for a 10–12 week dormancy period before restarting the cycle.
Symbolism
The amaryllis generally represents strength, determination, and beauty. The soft yellow and green of ‘Lemon Star’ specifically symbolise freshness, harmony, and hope.
