The Mandonii x Papi (or Hippeastrum mandonii x papilio) is a specialized hybrid amaryllis bulb that crosses two distinct South American species to produce unique, exotic blooms.
Key Characteristics
- Parentage: This hybrid is a cross between Hippeastrum mandonii, a rare species from the Andes known for its greenish-yellow throat, and Hippeastrum papilio (the Butterfly Amaryllis), famous for its striking burgundy and pale green stripes.
- Appearance: The flowers typically inherit the “butterfly” shape and intricate veining of the papilio parent, often featuring deep red or rose-burgundy markings against a lime-green or creamy-white base.
- Growth Habit: Unlike standard Dutch hybrids, this cross often retains some evergreen qualities and may not require a completely dry dormancy period to rebloom.
Planting & Care Tips
- Potting: Use a well-draining potting mix. Plant the bulb so the neck and “shoulders” are exposed above the soil line.
- Light: Provide bright, indirect sunlight. Rotate the pot regularly to prevent the flower stalks from leaning toward the light.
- Watering: Water sparingly until the first sprout appears. Once growing, keep the soil moist but never soggy to avoid bulb rot.
- Temperature: These hybrids thrive in warm indoor environments between 16–24°C (60–75°F).
