“Lai Buka” (sometimes spelled Lai-Buka) refers to the striped or variegated varieties of Amaryllis, particularly popular in Southeast Asia and parts of the Pacific. These plants are widely admired for their striking, trumpet-shaped blooms that feature bold patterns.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: These varieties typically feature large, showy petals with distinct striping, often in contrasting colors like deep red on white or pink on white.
- Structure: Like most Amaryllis (scientifically Hippeastrum), they grow from large bulbs and produce tall, sturdy stems that can reach 24–36 inches.
- Bloom Period: They are often forced to bloom during the winter holiday season (December–January) but can naturally flower in late winter or spring.
Basic Care Tips
- Light: They thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. If grown indoors, a sunny windowsill is ideal.
- Watering: Keep the soil moderately moist but avoid overwatering, as the bulb can easily rot if it sits in soggy soil.
- Potting: When planting, ensure at least one-third to one-half of the bulb remains above the soil line.
- Aftercare: After the flowers fade, cut the flower stalk but leave the leaves. This allows the plant to photosynthesize and store energy in the bulb for the next year’s bloom.
