The Joker Amaryllis (Hippeastrum ‘Joker’) is a popular, compact, and fast-growing bulbous plant known for its striking, hand-painted appearance. It is frequently used for indoor holiday decoration and as a gift due to its vibrant, high-contrast flowers.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: The flowers feature brilliant white petals with bold, vibrant red stripes and lines, often described as having a hand-painted or striped “candy-cane” look.
- Form: It is a Sonata or miniature amaryllis variety, generally producing shorter, sturdy stems (about 6–12 inches tall).
- Blooms: The flowers are large, usually measuring around 6 inches in diameter. Some sources describe them as double-flowering with slightly curled petals.
- Bloom Time: Fast-flowering, with blooms appearing 2–4 weeks after planting in some conditions, or up to 6–12 weeks depending on the environment.
- Fragrance: Generally no fragrance.
Planting and Care
- Planting Depth: Plant with the top third of the bulb exposed above the soil level.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight.
- Watering: Keep soil moist but not soggy; reduce watering as the plant enters dormancy.
- Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 65°F and 75°F.
- Support: Due to the large size of the blooms relative to the stem, it may require a stake for support.
- Hardiness: Suitable for USDA Zones 8–11 for outdoor planting.
Reblooming and Dormancy
- After Bloom: Cut the flower stalk 1–2 inches above the bulb after it finishes blooming.
- Dormancy: To trigger reblooming, allow the bulb to go dormant in a cool, dark place (45°–55°F) for 8–10 weeks in late summer.
Toxicity
- All parts of the Joker amaryllis are toxic to pets (dogs, cats) and humans if ingested.
