“Gubao Fairy” (also known as Amaryllis ‘Fairy Tale’) is a miniature double-flowering cultivar of amaryllis (Hippeastrum) known for its delicate, striped blooms and compact size.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: This variety features double flowers that start with white petals and develop soft pink to raspberry-red stripes as they mature.
- Size: It is a miniature cultivar, typically reaching a height of 14–16 inches (35–40 cm).
- Blooming: A single bulb often produces 2 to 3 stalks that bloom at different times, providing an extended flowering period.
- Symbolism: Like other amaryllis, it represents pride, strength, and determination. In Chinese culture, red-toned amaryllis are considered lucky flowers.
Quick Care Guide
- Planting: Use a well-draining pot only 1–2 inches wider than the bulb, leaving the top third of the bulb exposed above the soil.
- Light: Place in a bright spot with indirect sunlight. Rotate the pot daily to ensure the stems grow straight toward the light.
- Watering: Water sparingly after planting until you see growth, then keep the soil barely moist but never soggy.
- Post-Bloom: After the flowers fade, cut the stalks but keep the leaves growing in a sunny spot to replenish the bulb’s energy for next year
