The Hemerocallis ‘Chartwell’ (Chartwell daylily) is a popular, fragrant, tetraploid daylily known for its large, deep grape-red (plum) flowers that feature a contrasting creamy-gold throat.
Key Characteristics
- Flower Size & Type: The blooms are large, diurnal, single, and measure about 15 cm (6 inches) across.
- Height & Habit: The semi-evergreen plant reaches an ultimate height of about 76 cm (30 inches), forming a neat clump of arching, glossy green, strap-like foliage.
- Bloom Season: Flowers typically emerge in early to mid-summer (July and August). It is also known as a rebloomer, meaning it can produce a second flush of flowers later in the year if spent blooms are pruned and the soil is kept fertile.
- Origin: Registered by R.W. Munson in 1976, it even won an Honorable Mention from the American Daylily Society in 1980.
Care & Cultivation
- Sunlight: Thrives best in full sun to partial shade.
- Soil: Prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soils.
- Maintenance: To encourage better blooming and health, divide clumps every 3 to 5 years and remove dead flower stems after the season ends.
